Wang Yang is a member of the Politburo Standing Committee and is the current Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
Mr. Yang was born in 1955 to a family of humble means. After his father died, he went to work at a food processing factory to help his mother support the family. Wang eventually acquired a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Beijing's Central Party School and master's in management science from the University of Science and Technology in Hefei.
Known for his humorous and down-to-earth personality, Wang is often seen by analysts and Chinese citizens as a lone liberal in China's elite. Thus far, he has shied away from directly challenging the party's wishes. He has, however, spoken out against the Cultural Revolution and has argued for media transparency, democratic processes at the local level, and more more individual economic and social freedom.
