Impact of COVID-19 on Prison Systems

Updated: Jun 8, 2020

Prison systems across the United States are preparing for an influx of COVID-19 cases. After extensive research and planning, the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) is taking the following measures for federal facilities and is recommending state and country prisons follow the same guidance:

  • Social visits will be suspended for 30 days.

  • Telephone minutes for inmates will be increased.

  • Legal visits will be suspended for 30 days and replaced with confidential phone calls.

  • Inmate and staff movement between facilities will be halted.

  • Volunteers will be prohibited from entering facilities.

  • Staggered meal times and recreation are being implemented as needed by facility.
